Robust Bilateral Trade and Mediated Bargaining∗

چکیده

We consider bilateral trade problems subject to incomplete information on the reservation values of the agents. We address negotiations where the communication of proposals takes place though the filter of a third party, a mediator: traders submit proposals over continuous time to the mediator that receives bids and keeps them secret until they are compatible. A Robust regular equilibrium (RRE) is an (undominated) ex-post equilibria where (with sufficient delay) all compatible traders reach agreement. We present a characterizion of RRE for environments with risk neutral traders that discount the future at the same exponential rate. We show how to compute RRE strategy profiles, and we explicitly display the unique one where agreements split the net surplus in equal shares. Our results support the claim that bargaining trough a mediator is an effective procedure to promote efficiency. ∗Čopič is at Cowles Foundation, Yale and UCLA ([email protected]) and Ponsat́ı is at Institut d’Anàlisi Econòmica -CSIC, Barcelona ([email protected]).

Robust Trading Mechanisms with Budget Surplus and Partial Trade

In a bilateral bargaining problem with private values, Hagerty and Rogerson (1987) showed that essentially all dominant strategy incentive compatible, ex post individually rational, and budget balanced mechanisms are posted-price mechanisms, where a price is drawn from a distribution, and trade occurs if both players benefit from trading at this price. We relax budget balancedness to feasibilit...

Transfer of Bargaining Power Sources in Oil Trade Games

Bargaining, interdependence, and the rationality of fair division

We consider two-person bargaining games with interdependent preferences and bilateral incomplete information. We show that in both the ultimatum game and the two-stage alternating-offers game, our equilibrium predictions are consistent with a number of robust experimental regularities that falsify the standard game-theoretic model: occurrence of disagreements, disadvantageous counteroffers, and...

Bargaining and the value of money

Search models of monetary exchange have typically relied on Nash (1950) bargaining, or strategic games that yield an equivalent outcome, to determine the terms of trade. By considering alternative axiomatic bargaining solutions in a simple search model with divisible money, we show how this choice matters for important results such as the ability of the optimal monetary policy to generate an ef...
